Episode two The First Goodbye Let's begin. Have you ever met someone and within the first few minutes you felt as though you already knew them? Not from school, not from work, not even from another town. Somewhere much older than memory. Last week two souls made a promise. They chose their families, they stepped through the veil, and then they forgot. Or at least they thought they did. One soul opened tiny eyes beneath the warm glow of a hospital light. A nurse smiled. Welcome to Earth, little one. The baby answered with the universal response of newborns. A very loud protest. Apparently, being born was not on today's list of favorite activities. Miles away, another tiny cry filled the room. Another family, another beginning, different circumstances, different story. The same miracle. Neither child knew that somewhere else another tiny heartbeat had begun the journey too. With the years passed quickly, the little boy discovered that puddles existed for one reason, to jump in them. His mother disagreed frequently. Why are your shoes wet? He looked down. Well, they're practicing swimming. She sighed. Their shoes. They don't even know that. Across the country, the little girl discovered questions, hundreds of them. Why is the sky blue? Where do birds sleep? If worms don't like rain, why do they come outside? Her father smiled. I don't know. She nodded thoughtfully. That's okay, Dad. Then she asked another question. Anyway. Neither child remembered the promise, but something curious began happening. Every now and then, they would stop whatever they were doing and stare towards the horizon. Not because they saw something, because they felt something. Feeling too young for words. Like hearing a song without remembering where you heard it from. One afternoon, the boy found a feather. Perfect. White. He picked it up carefully. I think someone dropped this. His grandmother smiled. Maybe it's a gift. He looked around. I should probably say thank you then. That same afternoon, the little girl looked out her bedroom window. A feather drifted slowly past. She smiled for no reason that she could explain. Sometimes the universe whispers long before we understand its language. As the children grew, their personalities began unfolding. The boy climbed everything: trees, rocks, furniture. His father's patience, especially his father's patience. One day he proudly announced, I climbed all the way to the top. His father looked up. Well that's the refrigerator. I know. Why? I wanted to see if the cookies were lonely. The little girl loved stories. She filled notebooks with drawings of places that she's never visited, people she'd never met, stars she'd never seen. One afternoon her teacher asked, Where did you get these ideas? She smiled. I don't know. Sometimes our imagination remembers what our minds have forgotten. Years passed, birthdays came and went. Each child laughed, each child cried, each collected tiny pieces of the person they were becoming. Neither life was perfect, and neither was meant to be, because smooth roads rarely teach us how strong our hearts can become. And yet, on certain evenings, they both found themselves looking up at the same moon. Neither knew the other existed. Neither knew a promise had been made before time. But somewhere deep inside, a quiet feeling remained. Not loneliness, not sadness, just expectation. As though life itself was gently whispering, keep going, there is someone walking towards you. Far above what human eyes can see, two tiny threads of light shimmered, one golden, one silver, almost invisible, almost. With every choice, every lesson, every act of courage, the threads shifted. Not quickly, not dramatically, just enough to move one soul one step closer to the other. Maybe that's happening in your life too. Maybe someone you've never met is already taking the steps that will one day lead them to you. Maybe every detour, every delay, every unexpected turn is quietly shifting the map, not pulling you apart, but drawing the lines that will one day become one.
